Friday May 16th 2008 Privy Dig

Today Russ arranged a dig in West Chester Pa. The property was being renovated and was in the middle of downtown. However the building was built to the property line. But a round brick lined privy was exposed after the concrete floor was torn up in the back addition. Russ got permission to dig and invited us up. This brickliner started off with about 4 feet of debris and brick rubble that had been sinking in. At about 4 feet it went to a pure ash and we started moving quite quickly through this soft ash. At about 6 feet we set up the tripod and started bucketing out ash. This pit produced a few turn of the century bottles but very little else. It bottomed out at about 22 feet deep. But it was nice to dig indoors considering it rained all day.
